It’s hard to believe the miraculous claims of Jesus. As a result, many non-believers have denied His very existence. The story of God’s entry into the world and the fact that He was “tortured and executed for a symbolic sin by a nonexistent individual” is particularly ludicrous if you believe that God is “nonexistent” in the first place.
Some have claimed that Jesus was just another in a long line of dying savior mythologies; borrowing a little here and a little there, and constructed on the heels of prior deities like Horus, Osiris and Mithras. Some have accepted that Jesus was a real person but reject any claims to His miraculous activity or divinity. Others have declared that any story involving a sacrificial death such as that described in the Scriptures is simply “barking mad.”
The history of the Christian movement is well established from early document evidence. It’s clear that the apostles considered themselves to be eyewitnesses and expressed their testimony in the first century. They testified that Jesus was resurrected and never recanted their story. Whatever conclusion we draw about the existence and life of Jesus, our conclusions must account for the evidence of the apostolic testimony.
